Evelynn Escobar-Thomas — Interview-A Hedonistik Apparel Blog Series||Urbanwear Iconoclasts#2
When it comes to Streetwear,as long as Icons and ,Main Influencers goes you might Think of Kanye West,ASAP Rocky or other Big Names Like Pharell Williams ? “Virgil Abloh”..,
but i feel like there’s a younger, talented and fresh generation that are growing their personal Brand, sharing their love for streetwear, while using instagram and other social Media tools to spread the word about their Passion and interact with other brands online …
One of the ones that caught my interest is “Evelynn Escobar-Thomas”. @evemeetsWest . Evelynn masterfully use Instagram and social Media to convey her interest in fashion, getting the Eye of major platforms like “HypeBae” and getting mentionned on other big Instagram accounts.
I had the pleasure to sit and dicuss, with her ,streetwear ,her main insiprations for outfits, Her love for Pharell ,Missy Ellott and a lot more..Here’s the full interview:
So who’s Evelynn ? could you tell us a bit more about yourself ,and how did you get into streetwear?
I’m a 25 y/o Social Media Specialist who lives in LA and loves streetwear. I’m from Northern Virginia and having grown up with hometown influences like Missy Elliott and Pharrell, I was bound to get into it one way or another. It was really Pharrell’s influence that got my brother and I into everything when we were in middle school/highschool and its been a wrap ever since.
Were you personally always into fashion? What did you do before starting “EveMeetsWest”?
I’ve always been into fashion. When I was a little kid I wanted to be a fashion designer. Before I started EveMeetsWest I didn’t really have a creative platform other than Instagram as an outlet for my fashion influences etc.
How did you get the Idea to start #ItsaLook” and what’s the motivation behind it?
Blogging can be super cumbersome. #ItsALook started as a quick and easy series to help me break down my daily looks into digestible pieces of style inspiration.
Which’s your favortie volume from #itsalook” mine is Number “009” i digg the “Nike Huarache” shoes and the “UO x Champion” Beanie.
Thank you! That’s actually a super tough question. I think I’d have to go with 015. It’s super sleek, effortless and something I think is easy to recreate.
How did you become a social Media and branding sepcialist? and do you feel like Streetwear,Social Media and Personal Branding have become an essential part of who you are?
I started doing social media as a career way back in college. It spawned from internships and then turned into my full time job. I’ve gotten the chance to work with some big companies like The Honest Company, TOMS, etc. Streetwear has definitely become essential to my personal social media brand. I have a lot of friends tell me i’m their sneaker inspiration and so on. It’s pretty cool to be known for something you love.
In your opinion which brands have succeeded when it comes to eastblishing a great online brand, i mean mainly in streetwear ?
I think the allure of Anti Social Social Club online is really good. They have a level of mystery and really tap into the “youth culture” everyone always speaks of in a way that puts them at the forefront of everything. I also like that they spotlight women on their profiles. If you see a regram they post, it’s almost always a woman they’re featuring.
Are you genreally interested in menswear that can be altered to fit women? and Do you find that girls often are less interested in functionality and practicality “Apparel wise”?
I think girls are just as interested in functionality and practicality. With that said, we don’t want a woman’s version of men’s apparel to be super tight fitting etc. I like the coziness of guys clothing in proportion for someone my size. To me “gender” specification when it comes to clothing doesn’t matter. If it fits, looks good, and is comfortable to wear, I’ll buy it.
I seek inspiration from all over. Whether it’s from social media or iconic women like JLO from the early 2000s etc. I think it’s really cool that all the things I loved growing up are new again.
-8-Where do you seek inspirations for your daily outfits?
I seek inspiration from all over. Whether it’s from social media or iconic women like JLO from the early 2000s etc. I think it’s really cool that all the things I loved growing up are new again. I definitely seek style inspiration from younger me as well. Overalls, chokers, tinted sunglasses you name it. I was rocking all those things then and I love rocking them now.
-9-Any Social Media advice for young streetwear brands that are based online using E-Commerce platforms?how would you go about marketing apparel if you had started a tiny brand on the side yourself?
I’d tell them that your presence on social media will wholeheartedly dictate how your brand is perceived. If you come out of the gate with an on-point aesthetic, it will resonate with people. Don’t feel you have to just put stuff up to have a presence. Be methodical, be cautious, be smart about it. As far as marketing goes, “influencers” are your best friends. The more people you can get your stuff on with influence, the more you’ll organically spark an interest in others to seek you out and want to know more.
If I had to pick an all time favorite brand I’d have to say BBC/Ice Cream because that’s what started it all for me. BAPE when Nigo was still running things is up there too
If you had to pick your all time favorite Brands or items? what would they be? i’m sepcially curious about your choice in footwear since i’m a sneaker addict myself.
If I had to pick an all time favorite brand I’d have to say BBC/Ice Cream because that’s what started it all for me. BAPE when Nigo was still running things is up there too. As far as footwear goes, Nike will always be the OG but Adidas is definitely coming for that top spot. I love them both.
I try not to spend all my money on clothes, but when it comes to shoes lets not talk about that. lol!
How do you manage to have such an amazing wardrobe, and apparel items? do you get approached by brands,or do you often end up blowing up money on streetwear pieces?
Thank you! Thankfully because of the platform I’ve given myself, I have been fortunate enough to get some amazing pieces from brands I admire. For the most part I just act as my own stylist and will wait for things to drop online like the rest of us. I try not to spend all my money on clothes, but when it comes to shoes lets not talk about that. lol!
What’s next for Evelynn?
That’s a great question! lol. Really though, I hope to work with some of my favorite brands and partner up with a sneaker outlet in the near future. I’m also working with a friend to build a creative agency of sorts for the cozy girls of the world. In the meantime, I’m opening myself to any opportunities that may come my way. The future is bright.
